Kings may make better trade partners for the Rangers Tony DeAngelo
There’s been a lot of trade chatter in the NHL rumor mill about the Calgary Flames’ Sam Bennett and the New York Rangers’ Tony DeAngelo. The former has asked for a trade, the latter has been waived and will no longer play in NY.
Calgary is looking for a defenseman, and the Rangers could use a center. Makes sense, except the money doesn’t work unless Jeff Gorton retains a good percentage.
Kings make a better trade partner for the Rangers
One potential trade partner that was mentioned by Bob McKenzie are the L.A. Kings. A team that has over $9 million in cap space and a need for right handed defenseman in their top four.
The Kings could consume the entire $4.8 million cap hit DeAngelo comes with and not flinch. This would interest the Rangers who have already let it be known that they will simply have him sit and buyout the defenseman in the offseason. Financially, the cap penalty is under a million because Tony is 25 and can be a 1/3 buyout.
Alex Iafallo would be a nice acquisition
As to what the Rangers would like back, center/winger Alex Iafallo would be a nice return. The 27 year-old only makes $2.425 million and will be a UFA this coming offseason. Jeff Gorton will likely have to throw in a draft pick to incentivize L.A. into the deal.
Iafallo has 5 points in 9 games this season, so he has a little scoring touch to him. The native of Eden, NY would probably enjoy coming home to play hockey as well. He would immediately slot as the third line center until Filip Chytil returns from injury in 4-5 weeks.
