The New York Rangers got a jump on the March 7 NHL Trade Deadline by acquiring defenseman Calvin de Haan, forward Juuso Parssinen and second- and fourth-round picks in the 2025 NHL Draft from the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday for defenseman Ryan Lindgren, forward Jimmy Vesey and the rights to college defense prospect Hank Kampf.

The Rangers reportedly will retain half of Lindgren’s contract, which carries an average annual value of $4.5 million. He and Vesey can become unrestricted free agents on July 1. Colorado owns multiple selections in both rounds, so the picks the Rangers receive will be whichever is the highest in the draft order in that round.

The trade came less than 24 hours after a disappointing 3-2 home loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs that kept the Rangers four points behind the Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets, who own the two wild cards in the Eastern Conference entering play Saturday..

It’s the fourth significant deal this season by the Rangers, who previously traded away their captain, defenseman Jacob Trouba, as well as forwards Kaapo Kakko and Filip Chytil while bringing in defensemen Urho Vaakanainen and Will Borgen as well as center J.T. Miller.

The newcomers could make their Rangers debut on Sunday when the Nashville Predators visit Madison Square Garden.

De Haan, taken by the New York Islanders with the 12th pick in the 2009 draft, signed a one-year, $800,000 contract with the Avalanche as a free agent on July 1, 2024, and has seven points, all assists, in 44 games. The 33-year-old has 148 points (24 goals, 124 assists) in 676 NHL games during 13 seasons with the Islanders, Chicago Blackhawks, Tampa Bay Lightning, Carolina Hurricanes and Avalanche. He has been credited with at least 100 hits and 100 blocked shots six times.

He can become a UFA on July 1.

Parssinen, 24, was acquired by Colorado from Nashville on Dec. 28, 2024. He has 48 points (18 goals, 30 assists) in 126 NHL games, including 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in 44 games this season. The 2019 seventh-round pick had his best NHL season in 2022-23, finishing with career highs in games (45), assists (19), points (25) and game-winning goals (3). His NHL career high in goals is eight, set last season.

The native of Hameenlinna, Finland, skated in his 100th NHL game on Nov. 17. He can become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights on July 1.

Lindgren, the longtime partner of Adam Fox on the Rangers top defense pair, has a career-high 19 points (two goals, 17 assists) in 54 games this season, averaging 19:56 TOI per game. He was slowed by a broken jaw sustained during training camp and only recently started to play the kind of physical hockey the Rangers were accustomed to.

He has 99 points (12 goals, 87 assists) in 387 regular-season games, all with the Rangers, and 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in 43 Stanley Cup Playoff games, helping the Rangers reach the Eastern Conference Final in 2022 and 2024.

Vesey missed the first 10 games of the season and has struggled to find playing time since his return. The 32-year-old has six points (four goals, two assists) in 33 games this season while averaging a career-low 10:40 of ice time. Vesey has 192 points (100 goals, 92 assists) in 616 NHL games and scored his 100th career goal in the Rangers’ 5-3 road win against the Pittsburgh Penguins last Sunday.

Kampf is playing his senior season at Cornell University and has seven points (two goals, five assists) in 28 games. The 22-year-old, selected in the seventh round (No. 208) in the 2021 draft has 25 points (four goals, 21 assists) in 126 games for the Big Red.
