Rangers re-up minor-league goalies Dylan Garand, Talyn Boyko with 1-year deals

The New York Rangers locked up the potential goaltending rotation for their American Hockey League team, the Hartford Wolf Pack, by agreeing to terms with Dylan Garand and Talyn Boyko on two-way, one-year contracts.

Each player will make $775,000 at the NHL level and $100,000 in the minors, according to Puckpedia.

With veteran Louis Domingue off to the KHL after a poor season in Hartford, Garand is now third in line on the Rangers goaltending depth chart behind No. 1 Igor Shesterkin and his backup, Jonathan Quick, who turns 40 in January. The 23-year-old has taken warmups with the Blueshirts on multiple occasions but has yet to play in an NHL game since being selected by the Rangers in the fourth round (No. 103) of the 2020 draft.

Garand is the unquestioned starter in Hartford and figures to be the first goalie to be called up in case of an injury to Shesterkin or Quick.

2024-25 was the best of Garand’s three full pro seasons. He was 20-10-8 in 39 games for Hartford with a 2.73 goals-against average, three shutouts and a .913 save percentage, tied for the ninth-best among qualified goalies in the AHL. He also represented the Wolf Pack at the 2025 AHL All-Star Challenge.

Garand was named AHL Goaltender of the Month for December, when he was 4-2-0 with two shutouts, a 1.35 GAA, and save percentage. He was the sixth Hartford goalie to win the award and the first to do so since Shesterkin in October 2019.

Hartford coach Grant Potulny leaned on Garand in an unsuccessful effort to make the Calder Cup Playoffs, starting him in 13 of the Wolf Pack’s final 19 games. Hartford finished seventh in the eight-team Atlantic Division with a 30-33-7-2 record; their 69 points left them five shy of the Springfield Thunderbirds, who grabbed the final playoff spot.

The native of Victoria, British Columbia, has a 49-42-16 record in four AHL seasons, all with the Wolf Pack, with a 2.92 GAA and .902 save percentage. Garand also is 10-7 in 17 Calder Cup playoff appearances.

Internationally, he’s represented Team Canada in several tournaments, including the 2025 World Championship, where he shut out Slovenia 4-0 in his only appearance, and the World Junior Championships in 2021 and 2022. He helped Canada win gold in 2022.

Boyko played in 33 regular-season games with the Tulsa Oilers of the ECHL in 2024-25, and was 20-8-5 with a .913 save percentage. He also appeared in two postseason games with the Oilers. He made his AHL debut with Hartford on Dec. 31, 2024, finishing with 32 saves and, for good measure, earning an assist in the Wolf Pack’s 7-0 win over Springfield.

In five games with Hartford, the 22-year-old was 2-2-0 with a 2.61 GAA and a .917 save percentage.

The 6-foot-7, 200-pound goaltender, selected by the Rangers in the fourth round (No. 112) of the 2021 draft, has played in 59 ECHL games for the Oilers and the Cincinnati Cyclones, with a 33-17-6 record and 2.98 goals-against average.

In addition to Garand and Boyko, the Rangers’ goaltending depth includes Hugo Ollas and Callum Tung, each of whom is signed for the upcoming season.

Ollas, selected in the seventh round (No. 197) by the Rangers in 2020, spent 2024-25 in the ECHL, dividing time between Bloomington and Worcester; he played one game for Hartford in 2023-24. Tung signed a three-year contract with the Rangers on April 1 after leading Connecticut to its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament to cap a successful freshman season.

The 21-year-old undrafted free agent was 1-1-0 with a 2.28 GAA and .893 save percentage in two games with Hartford.
