Rangers shut out Red Wings 4-0 behind Jonathan Quick’s 37 saves
Jonathan Quick made saves 37 saves, including 19 in the second period, as the New York Rangers survived the barrage in their defensive zone, scored twice in 48 seconds and rebounded nicely from their worst performance of the season in a 4-0 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday at Little Caesars Arena.
After making nine saves in relief of Igor Shesterkin in an 6-1 ugly loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday, Quick earned his 396th career victory, inching closer to becoming the 14th NHL goalie to reach 400 wins.
Chris Kreider scored on a power play in the first period before Quick faced constant pressure in the second. After Quick kept it 1-0, Jimmy Vesey and Artemi Panarin scored late in the second to provide the Rangers (9-3-1) breathing room.
Kreider scored his 113th career power-play goal and Panarin had his sixth multi-point game of the season. Vesey scored his first goal after making his season debut Sunday against the New York Islanders.
Reilly Smith finished off the season sweep (3-0-0) of the Red Wings with a 157-foot empty-net goal with 3:43 remaining.
Quick made some timely saves in the opening minutes as the Rangers allowed eight of the game’s first 11 shots. He then made back-to-back saves on Dylan Larkin and Jeff Petry with about 10 minutes left in the second and moved slightly out of the crease to deny former Rangers forward Patrick Kane during a Detroit power play.
The Red Wings outshot the Rangers 18-8 in the second, including 15-4 before the two clutch goals.

Kreider opened the scoring by doing what he does best – scoring on a deflection seven seconds into the first power play.
Vincent Trocheck won a face-off from former Rangers forward Andrew Copp and passed to Adam Fox. After getting the return feed from Panarin, Fox’s blast connected with Kreider, who was left alone in front of the crease to easily finish off his eighth goal at 13:13 of the first period.
Vesey scored at 16:52 of the second period, after Zac Jones kept the puck alive at the end boards. Jones had a shot blocked by Moritz Seider, but maintained possession, moved the puck to Sam Carrick behind the net and Vesey got the pass in front of the crease to finish off his first goal since March 9.
Panarin’s one-timer off a Mika Zibanejad feed made it 3-0 with 2:20 left in the second.
Smith’s empty-netter iced the road win for the Rangers, who are 5-1-0 away from Madison Square Garden this season. Fox picked up his second assist of the night on the goal.
With a solid bounce back performance under their belts, the Rangers take a step up in competition when they host the League-leading Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday at MSG.
