The consensus around the NHL is that Patrick Kane is going to be a member of the New York Rangers soon. Although nothing is official, the trade is believed to be worked out but all things are on hold as the cap accrual works itself out.

UPDATE: NEW YORK RANGERS ACQUIRE PATRICK KANE (TRADE DETAILS)

According to Elliotte Friedman, the Rangers could announce the trade after 5 PM ET on Tuesday.

“If NYR want to acquire Patrick Kane and have him count against their cap on Wednesday (not today), they can acquire him after 5 pm (ET),” Friedman tweeted. “Things continue to be put in motion behind the scenes (approval, equipment, logistics). We’ll see when it happens.”

The Rangers will be in Philadelphia to face the Flyers on Wednesday night.

Patrick Kane to the New York Rangers today?

The New York Rangers put themselves through the wringer on Sunday in their win over the Los Angeles Kings.

They willingly played shorthanded despite having dressed a full lineup and losing K’Andre Miller to a match penalty late in the first period. Defenseman Braden Schneider did not take a single shift to protect him from injury in order to send him down to the AHL (paper transaction) to accrue the needed cap space for a Kane trade by Wednesday.

There is of course now the matter of Ryan Lindgren’s shoulder injury (day-to-day) and the potential for Miller to be suspended. A ruling by the NHL Department of Player Safety is expected today.

As for Kane, he openly expressed disappointment when the Rangers acquired Vladimir Tarasenko in early February. Since then, it appears that desire to play for the Rangers continued and led to all parties seeking a way to get a trade done.

The Blackhawks, who already will not be getting anything for Jonathan Toews after he didn’t waive his full no-move clause to deal with an illness, need to get something for Kane. Almost everyone in the media is preparing fans of the Hawks for an underwhelming return.

Meanwhile, the Rangers are going to have to surrender at least a few draft picks and some mid-tier prospects. Multiple reports indicate that GM Chris Drury is going to retain his first-round pick in this deal and highly-touted prospect Brennan Othmann is not involved. That leaves the Blueshirts 2023 second and third round selections in play for this deal to the Hawks and a third party.

Keep an eye on prospects like Lauri Pajuniemi, Bobby Trivigno, and Ryder Korczak as possible trade chips. It was believed that defenseman Zac Jones was a possibility but with an injury and suspension on defense, it would be wise to retain him.

Kane, 34, has 16 goals and 45 points in 54 games. The three-time Stanley Cup champion has been sitting at home awaiting for a trade since the weekend. He’ll be a UFA in July.
