Pierre McGuire was on NHL Live and feels in the wake of Derek Stepan’s injury that Kevin Hayes could step up for NY.

Not too shabby an endorsement from the man who knows what every young NHL player eats for breakfast. When it comes to knowledge of these kids, Pierre is tops and probably knows what brand diaper they used as babies.

“He’s a tremendous talent,” McGuire said. “He’s got major, major upside, which is a positive thing for their group.”

Yesterday, we touched on the subject and feel that either JT Miller or possibly veteran Matthew Lombardi would most likely get first crack to step up. Clearly, Derick Brassard slots in to the top spot to play with Rick Nash to start the season.

Dominic Moore and JT Miller could play a 2A – 2B scenario depending on who is going better that evening at center. Logic and prudence would dictate that for JT Miller to be successful in an increased role, he will need a responsible winger that defenses will focus on. That winger will also need to cover for Miller’s mistakes.  The obvious candidate to flank Miller is Marty St. Louis.

At some point next week, there will be a lot more clarity to the Blueshirts’ opening night roster. However, it is one that we feel Kevin Hayes has a place on.
