The New York Rangers are set to face the Carolina Hurricanes in a battle for first place in the Metro Division. This is a must win game for the Blueshirts in order to have a chance at winning a division title.

Head coach Gerard Gallant announced that Igor Shesterkin will get the start in between the pipes. His record against the Canes for his career is 1-1 with a 2.53 GAA and a .906 SV%.

As far as the rest of the lineup, per multiple reports, he would not say which of the previously injured players were going in.

On Monday, Andrew Copp, Kaapo Kakko, and Filip Chytil were all skating at practice as designated as a game-time decision.

By the way practice played out, it appears that Copp and Chytil were most likely to be reinserted but that remains to be seen.

Patrick Kane praises Blueshirts quick rebuild

The Chicago Blackhawks have long been eliminated from playoff contention. There’s plenty of questions surrounding the future of the team and in particular some of the veterans.

Patrick Kane spoke with the media today and cited both the Kings and Rangers rebuild efforts. In particular, how quickly it can be done.

“You can win and still rebuild. I think there’s teams that have accelerated that too,” Kane said as he cited the work the L.A. Kings have done recently to infuse youth in the lineup and make the playoffs.

“Same thing with the Rangers, right? They put out that memo a couple of years ago that they’re rebuilding, and all of a sudden they’re one of the best teams in the league a couple of years later,” Kane added. “Obviously, you bring a guy in like Panarin, that helps, and Shesterkin. He comes to the forefront. You need those young guys obviously to take next steps but I think it could be done quicker than maybe some people think.”

By the sounds of it, Kane seems optimistic about sticking around if the Hawks do indeed rebuild.
