The Rangers have been focusing on improving face-off in recent games, but they do not have a specialist. An answer may be out there and available for the taking in Detroit.

Luke Glendening face-off specialist

Last night on TSN’s Insider Trading, Frank Seravalli mentioned three pending UFA veterans that are available. One of those players is 31 year old-center Luke Glendening.

Offensively, Glendening is not going to bring much to the table as he only has 4 points in 19 games. But that’s not why you would trade for him. Let me run off his face-off winning percentages for this season and the three years prior.

  • 2020-21: 67.8%
  • 2019-20: 56.14%
  • 2018-19: 55.6%
  • 2017-18: 58.03%

Pretty good no? For his career, Glendening is a career FO% of 54.8 and is without a doubt one of the best at them. He currently leads the NHL in this category.

Why add Glendening?

This one is fairly simple considering that he’s cheap at $1.8 million and may only cost a mid-round draft pick. He also addresses a huge need for David Quinn.

If you are still not sold, let me ask you if you recall the Rangers down by a goal winning a key face-off with the goalie pulled? Exactly!

Bottom line, he would be a great tool in the box for Quinn to use for key face-offs. After doing so, he could leave for the bench and bring on a more offensive player.

Sounds like a plan to me.
