Free Agent Frenzy Day is here, let’s look at NYR targets

Opening bell is just hours away (12 EST), and here’s the latest updates on targets.

What the NYR Need?

The Rangers need to fill at least 1 center spot if not 2. A possible 3rd or 4th winger. A top pair defenseman who is right handed.

Backup

This morning Bob McKenzie started connecting players to teams he believes will have a deal in place. One was goaltender Ondrej Pavelec.

Center(s)

Since trading Stepan, the Rangers opened up a big hole at center. They are rumored on several top names available. This info is an amalgamation of insider reports.

Joe Thornton: Looking for at least a 2 year deal around 5M per. Top suitors are SJ and LA. I don’t think the Rangers can lure him here without an overpay.

Patrick Marleau: A winger, turned center who is may have an offer from SJ already for 2 years at 4.5M per. If that is the case, I’d rather the Rangers decline.

Nick Bonino: He’s 29, and is looking for a 4-5 year deal. While he could help the Rangers center depth, he isn’t replacing Stepan and he’s likely looking for about 4M per. Avoid if that is the case.

Brian Boyle: A return of Boyle has some potential. He would instantly give the Rangers an excellent face-off guy who can solidify the 4th line.

Defense

Kevin Shattenkirk…that is all in my book! The Rangers need to up their offer and give him close to the 7M for 7 years the NJ Devils may already have on the table. I still believe a deal can be done between the 2 parties that works for both sides.

Other notable free agents on the blue line (who are RH) include Dennis Wideman and Cody Franson.
