NHL: Golden Knights trade of Evgenii Dadonov reversed
The NHL on Wednesday invalidated Monday’s trade of Vegas Golden Knights forward Evgenii Dadonov to the Anaheim Ducks.
“The trade could not be concluded because Dadonov’s contract includes a limited no-trade clause, which has not been complied with,” the league said in a brief statement.
The proposed deal struck at Monday’s trade deadline would have sent Dadonov and a second-round pick to the Ducks in exchange for defenseman John Moore and the contract of retired forward Ryan Kesler.
Golden Knights welcome back Dadonov
Dadonov is expected to be with the Golden Knights when they host the Nashville Predators on Thursday night in Las Vegas, per multiple reports.
Dadonov, who turned 33 earlier this month, has scored three goals in his last two games and has 27 points (15 goals, 12 assists) in 62 games in his first season with Vegas.
The eight-year veteran has 249 points (119 goals, 130 assists) in 397 NHL games with the Florida Panthers (2009-20), Ottawa Senators (2020-21) and Golden Knights.
What happened with Dadonov trade?
The NHL Trade Deadline had already expired when news broke that the Vegas Golden Knights unloaded Evgenii Dadonov to the Anaheim Ducks. There was even some noise that the deal did not make it into the league’s central registry before the 3 PM ET cutoff to submit trades.
That wasn’t the only problem.
Apparently, Vegas’ attempt to unload the 33 year-old’s $5M cap hit in order to make way for Mark Stone’s inevitable return from LTIR hit a snide. Dadonov has a no-move clause and the Ducks were on his list.
Reports suggested that Vegas was not aware of the clause when he was acquired from Ottawa. There was also talking about paper filing being an issue. That’s why it was not considered when Dadonov was moved on Monday.

Somehow, on trade call from Ottawa to Vegas (a team Dadonov could not block), Golden Knights and NHL were led to believe protection had expired/not filed properly. But, there is correspondence proving no-trade paperwork filed correctly (and on-time) June 30. Dadonov was traded to Vegas on July 28. The claim is the paperwork was filed before that.
So we will see how this is adjudicated. Feel for Dadonov, who did nothing wrong here and is caught in tough spot.
Pierre LeBrun noted in a response to a question on the matter that it was clear the paperwork was properly submitted.
“From what I can gather, the no-trade list was in fact updated and submitted in time,” he tweeted. “Which is why his no-trade remains in effect now and why he’s allowed to block a trade to Anaheim if he wants to continue to do so.”
