Rangers Roundup: Brennan Othmann record season for Flint, Panarin flirting with 100 points, and more
The New York Rangers continue to be pleased with development of their first round pick from the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, Brennan Othmann.
After being selected as the Rangers Prospect of the Month for March, he has started April off in strong fashion.
Per NYR:
Brennan Othmann is back on the Future Blue Radar after a stellar performance throughout the month of March. This season, #78 has played in 61 games, breaking the Flint Firebirds’ franchise record for most goals in a season, with 43. He not only leads the team in goals but also leads the team in assists (46) and points generated (89). Watch out for the left wing Brennan Othmann.
Rangers prospect Brennan Othmann sets Flint record
On Sunday, Othmann set a franchise record for points in a season by scoring his 44th goal to register point 91.
The New York Rangers selected 6-0, 175-pound forward 15th overall in the 2021 Draft. He had an impressive camp as an 18 year-old and appears to have a bright future with the Rangers.
This season, the now 19 year-old star has 91 points in 63 OHL games. He should be making the jump to pro next season with the Hartford Wolf Pack.
One thing to keep in mind is that Othmann is a left wing and will likely stay at his natural position. With the Rangers locked in for the next several years having Panarin, Chris Kreider, and Alexis Lafreniere, it will be interesting to see how Chris Drury plans to handle it.
Othmann is unlikely to crack the team next year, but he will make a push in 2024. That’s the same time Kreider’s full no-trade becomes a limited one.
Artemi Panarin flirting with 100 points
After a three point performance on Saturday in a 5-1 win over the Ottawa Senators, Artemi Panarin now has 88 points in 68 contests.
Can he hit 100 points with 9 games remaining?
If we just go by his season scoring rate of 1.29 points per game this season, he will finish with 99 points. However, in his last 10 games he’s been heating up with 16 points for a 1.6 average. That would have him finish with 102 points.
Should Panarin hit the century mark, he would be the first Rangers player since Jaromir Jagr to do so. Jagr record 109 points in the 2005-06 season.
New York Rangers potential playoff opponents
The New York Rangers clinched their first playoff spot in 5 years on Saturday. Head coach Gerard Gallant made it clear that their work is not done this season.
“You always fight for home ice, if it’s first place that’s great,” he said after the game. “We’ve got 9 games left we’ll try and finish as high as we can.”
Yesterday, we looked at potential playoff opponents for the first round and the probability of them facing each one. Here’s the likely order:
- Pittsburgh Penguins
- Washington Capitals
