On Monday, the New York Rangers will take on the Buffalo Sabres for the second time this season. It will also be Hockey Fights Cancer Night, held annually in support of cancer patients and their families. The Rangers are coming off an electric win over the Boston Bruins on Saturday. They are now just the second team to have defeated them in regulation this season. With the win, the Rangers now sit first in the NHL and will look to keep that position against Buffalo.

The Sabres are coming off a tough loss to the New Jersey Devils, 7-2. They registered only 12 shots in the contest. They will be looking to get revenge on the Blueshirts, who beat them in the opening game of the season by a score of 5-1. The Rangers are 3-0-2 in their last five meetings against the Sabres. They are currently riding a 14 game point streak against the Sabres (11-0-3) and will look to keep it alive.

Entering Monday night’s matchup, New York is on a three-game win streak, and have won seven of their last eight. They lead the league in points percentage with a .816 and have the most wins (15) through their first 19 games in franchise history. The Blueshirts have been firing on all cylinders and are beginning to get contributions throughout the lineup.

New York Rangers vs Buffalo Sabres

After putting up seven goals on the NHL’s most dominant regular-season team over the last two years, the Rangers will now turn their attention to the Buffalo Sabres, who have struggled as of late. It is important for the Rangers not to take their foot off the gas against a lesser opponent. This is a great opportunity for the Blueshirts to extend their win streak to four games.

For New York, every opponent is treated the same. The win against Boston and the matchup against Buffalo are no different. “We come to the rink and we play the game we’re supposed to play and we feel good about that style,” said Jacob Trouba.

The Sabres are 2-2-1 in their last five matchups. Coming off an embarrassing loss to New Jersey, expect them to come out firing with a strong emphasis on getting shots on goal. One of the biggest storylines for the Sabres this year is the loss of their star forward Tage Thompson, who is out week-to-week with an upper body injury.

Despite this, the Sabres still have players who can score. Jeff Skinner and Casey Mittelstadt have led the way in scoring with 17 points each. Rasmus Dahlin has registered 17 of his own from the blue line. In net, expect either Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen or Devon Levi to get the start, as they have split time starting eight games each.

The Rangers will look to keep doing what has made them so successful this season, which is keeping their expectations high no matter the situation. “I think our guys are going into games and expecting to win,” Laviolette mentioned. “Expecting to play a certain way and if we do that, we can see the results.”

The Rangers will look to continue in their winning ways as they are now rested with the day off on Sunday. It should be an exciting matchup when the puck drops at Madison Square Garden.
