NHL Standings FAQ
What conferences and divisions can I view on this standings page?
You can switch between the Eastern Conference and Western Conference, and also view each division. In the East, the Metropolitan Division and Atlantic Division are the two divisions, with eight teams in each. In the West, the Central Division and Pacific Division are the two divisions, also with eight teams in each. Teams play through the regular season to set the standings and earn playoff spots.
How do wild cards work?
After the top teams in each division are set, the next best teams in the conference can still make the playoffs as wild cards. Wild card spots go to the teams with the most points that did not finish in the top division positions.
What does OTL mean on the standings?
OTL means Overtime Losses (this includes shootout losses, too). The team still earns 1 point for losing in overtime or a shootout.
What does DIFF mean on the standings?
DIFF is goal differential. It’s goals scored minus goals allowed.
What does STRK mean on the standings?
STRK is the team’s current streak, like W3 (three wins in a row) or L2 (two losses in a row).
