News: David Quinn breaks down Rangers bubble plan and NHL promises made for TV playoff experience

The Rangers will practice one last time at the MSG Training Center today at 12PM. The game plan as David Quinn divulged yesterday, is to head to Toronto and skate every day there.

After playing the Islanders in their exhibition contest on the 29th, the team will take a day off. Then the quest for the Cup begins on August 1st with game one of the Qualifying Round against the Carolina Hurricanes at 12PM.

Here’s news and notes from the Rangers head coach post-practice presser.

  • Will not name starter until Game 1 or day before
  • PP needs work, PK has been good
  • Vitali Kravtsov has improved since he last saw him
  • All but K’Andre Miller (who is ineligible to play) will go to Toronto

NHL Playoffs will be a made for TV event

The NHL has a huge opportunity here that they do not want to waste. They know that how these playoffs come across on TV will go a long way to financial recovery.

According to Steve Mayer, the NHL’s Chief Content Officer, “We’re going to do something that really caters to the fans at home.” His promise is to bring each arena to life during the games, with each team’s local goal horns and music. The incorporation of fans videos will be interesting.

Anyone who has been watching baseball has seen the ridiculous cardboard cutouts. Last night’s ESPN telecast of the Yankees vs Nationals game heard very light crowd noise pumped in. None of which felt natural.

The NHL has provided a rendering of what the presentation on TV would look like, and I’m really looking forward to it. These are uncharted waters for many sports leagues, but hockey has a real opportunity to stand out.
