Report: Rangers top prospect Brennan Othmann close to being traded in OHL
New York Rangers top prospect Brennan Othmann is on the verge of being traded from the Flint Firebirds to the Peterborough Petes per Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek.
Othmann is currently suspended two games for firing the puck into the opposition’s bench on November 6. His suspension ends after tonight’s Firebirds’ game versus the Petes.
Othmann, 19, is a native of Scarborough, Ontario which is just a two hour drive to Peterborough.
Brennan Othmann being traded in OHL
The New York Rangers selected Othmann in the first-round of the 2021 NHL Draft at 16 overall.
In 2021-22, he scored 50 goals and 97 points for the Flint Firebirds and was also named captain. This season, Othmann is off to a great with 11 goals and 24 points in 16 games on 83 shots. He also has 31 penalty minutes and a +4 rating.
What will be interesting in this trade to Peterborough is if he will wear a letter. They currently have defenseman Shawn Spearing wearing the C for the second straight season. Plus the Petes just finalized their leadership group last week.
The Rangers would’ve loved to keep Othmann around but thanks to an outdated CHL agreement with the NHL, he was ineligible to be sent down to the AHL which took away any flexibility. According to the rule, a player must be at least 20 years-old or competed in four seasons of junior hockey before they can be assigned to any NHL minor league affiliate.
“It was great. I learned a lot valuable pro tips that I can bring back here to junior hockey,” Othmann said after being sent back to the OHL. “I kept up with the speed, it’s just the little details. I wanted to go in there and make the team but I knew I wasn’t going to because of their roster right now.”
Othmann signed his entry-level contract with the Rangers on August 12, 2021.
Since this is an OHL trade, the Rangers have no involvement but it will be interesting to see what they think of the move in the coming days.
