Rangers prospect Gabe Perreault leads Boston College to sweep over rival

The New York Rangers college prospects continue to impress this season. However, no one is opening more eyes and dropping more jaws than Gabe Perreault.

Since the Blueshirts drafted him this past summer, he’s been growing ever more impressive. After playing a big role in helping the USA Hockey capture gold at the World Junior Championships in early January, he’s continuing his torrid scoring pace at Boston College.

The Rangers 2023 1st Round Pick Gabe Perreault and 2023 3rd Round Pick Drew Fortescue had their first experience in the Green Line Rivalry in the Battle of Comm Ave against Boston University. It was the first time the two teams met as number one and two in the national polls. Friday night at Conte Forum, the Eagles debuted new golden alternate jerseys for the special occasion. Perreault found the back of the net once again in the second period, finishing an odd-man rush to give his team a 2-0 lead.

Perreault’s goal would stand as the eventual game winner in the 4-1 victory. Teammate Drew Fortescue earned a secondary assist on the Eagles’ first goal, which was his second assist of the season and fifth point.

Saturday night at Agganis Arena, Perreault extended his point streak to nine games by scoring his second of the weekend and ninth goal of the season while on a 5-3 powerplay. The freshman slammed home a pass from teammate Will Smith.

The goal also extended Perreault’s goal scoring streak to three games. He leads Boston College in scoring with thirty six points and twenty seven assists in twenty three games played. His point total is third overall in the nation (first amongst freshmen), while his assist total is tied for third.

Perreault also was credited with a faceoff win, with three shots on goal and a hooking minor. Drew Fortescue did not record any stats during the game, which Boston College went on to win 4-3. The Eagles improved to 18-4-1 on the season with the sweep. and will travel to Lowell, Massachusetts on Friday, February 2nd to face the River Hawks before a rematch against Boston University in the Beanpot on Monday.

Other Rangers’ College Prospects News

Elsewhere in Hockey East, 2020 7th Round Pick of the New York Rangers, Hugo Ollas was the starting goaltender on Saturday for the Merrimack College Warriors against Northeastern University Huskies. The junior netminder stopped twenty two of twenty five shots against in the 4-1 loss. Ollas has now lost his second consecutive start, and four of his last fives games. His record is now 4-7 on the season, with a 2.96 goals against average and a .903 save percentage. Merrimack drops to 10-14-1 overall and will host UMass on Friday, February 2nd before travelling to Durham, New Hampshire for a match against the Wildcats on Saturday, February 3rd.

Jaroslav Chmelar remained out of the lineup for Providence College as he recovers from wrist surgery. The 2021 5th Round Pick of the Rangers had five goals and fourteen assists for fourteen points in sixteen games played before his injury. The Friars earned a pair of victories over UMass Lowell River Hawks, winning 7-2 on Friday before an overtime 4-3 triumph on Saturday. Providence are 14-7-2 on the seasons and will face the University of Connecticut Huskies on February 2nd & 3rd.

Defenseman Hank Kempf of the Cornell Big Red was credited with one shot on goal Friday during a 2-0 victory against fellow New York Rangers prospect Zakary Karpa and the Harvard University in ECAC play. The Crimson captain was 9-8 on faceoffs for the game. Karpa had a primary assist on Saturday during a 6-3 win over Colgate on Saturday to improve his totals to two goals, three assists for five points. The center went 9-7 on faceoffs. This was only the fourth win of the season for Harvard, who have a record of 4-12-3 and have a tough test against defending champion Quinnipiac University on Friday, February 2nd before facing Northeastern University in the Beanpot on Monday, February 5th. As for Cornell, they improved to 11-4-4 for the seasons after a 2-2 tie against Dartmouth on Saturday. Kempf had one shot on goal and was -1. Cornell will host St. Lawrence University on Friday, February 2nd and Clarkson University on Saturday, February 3rd.

Forward Brody Lamb had one shot on goal for the Minnesota Golden Gophers and finished -1 Friday during a 3-2 loss against Michigan State University during Big 10 conference play. The 2021 New York Rangers 4th Round Pick added an assist on Saturday on what ended up being the game winning goal in a 5-1 victory. The sophomore has ten goals, nine assists, and nineteen points in twenty six games played so far this season. Minnesota has a record of 15-7-4 and will face the Wisconsin Badgers on Friday, February 2nd and 3rd.

Junior defenseman Victor Mancini and the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks upset St. Cloud State 7-6 in overtime on Friday night. The fifth round pick of the Rangers in 2022 had three shots on goal and two blocks, but did not record any points. Mancini was credited with four shots on goal Saturday during a 1-1 tie. He has three goals and four assists for seven points on the season. Omaha has a 12-9-3 record and will host Minnesota Duluth on Friday, February 2nd and 3rd.

Sophomore center Noah Laba continues to make a name for himself, as he and Colorado College Tigers teammate Kaiden Mbereko were nominated for the Hobey Baker Award. In a bit of deja vu, the fourth round pick of the New York Rangers scored the game winning overtime goal in a 2-1 victory over the Western Michigan Broncos on both Friday and Saturday night to be named first star of the game.

Laba was also impressive at the faceoff circle, going 10-9 on Friday with a record of 11-6 on Saturday. With three goals during the series, Laba increased his totals to fourteen goals, eight assists, and twenty two points in twenty three games played. He is currently riding a five game goal and point streak. Colorado College improved to 15-8-1 on the season, and will look to continue their five game winning streak against St. Cloud State on Friday, February 2nd and 3rd.
