New York Rangers defenseman Nils Lundkvist scored his first NHL goal late in the first period against the Colorado Avalanche.

On the power play, Lundkvist took a feed from Filip Chytil near the half wall and rifled a wrist shot over Darcy Kuemper’s shoulder.

In the midst of his celebration, Kaapo Kakko picked up the puck and brought the keepsake to the bench.

Last season with Lulea in the SHL, Nils Lundkvist was recognized as the SHL’s best Swedish born defenseman by winning the Salming Trophy. He registered 32 points on the strength of 14 goals in 52 games this season. Those goals were the most from any defenseman 21 years or younger in SHL history.

The first round pick in the 2018 NHL draft, 28th overall, has 1G – 3A in 20 games this season so far.
