Rangers Roundup: NHL opt-out deadline today, WJC action has Braden Schneider ejected and Brett Berard dazzles

The deadline to opt-out of play for the 2020-21 NHL season is today at 5PM ET. No member of the New York Rangers is expected to opt-out, however I have reached out to several sources to confirm this morning.

I will update when info becomes available.

List of RTP player opt-outs

Prior to RTP action, six players opted out and one assistant coach. It is expected that this list could be even less this season.

  • Travis Hamonic, CGY
  • Mike Green, EDM
  • Steven Kampfer, BOS
  • Karl Alzner, MTL
  • Sven Baertschi, VAN
  • Roman Polak, DAL
  • Tuukka Rask, BOS (during RTP)
  • Mike Kitchen, FL (assistant coach)

New York Rangers prospect Brett Berard scores a beauty

Brett Berard was selected in the 5th round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. The 5-9″ forward from Rhode Island will play at Providence College this upcoming season. He’s known for his clutch scoring and dogged determination on the puck. That was exemplified in his 3 point (1G, 2A) performance last night in a win against Austria.

According to the NYR PR staff, Berard is the first Blueshirts’ prospect to post a 3 point game since JT Miller in 2013.

Berard’s next game will be against the Czech Republic on Tuesday, December 29 at 2 PM ET.

Braden Schneider ejected for high hit

The hit occurred 8:40 into the first period when Schneider lined up Jan-Luca Schumacher for a body check. The timing was right, but his shoulder was high and made contact to the head of the prone forward. Fortunately, Schumacher was able to leave the ice on his own accord.

Canada steamrolled over Germany 16-2, but will be without one of their better defenseman for at least one game. They will play Slovakia tomorrow at 6 PM ET.
