Reports surfaced late in the season that the Rangers were shopping Grubbe before the June 1 deadline to sign draft picks.

Grubbe was acquired when the Rangers traded away Jimmy Vesey to the Buffalo Sabres in 2019. In that deal they received a third-round pick in 2021 as compensation which they used to select the 6-3′ and 203 pounds center.

The 20 year-old was taken 65th overall selection and played this past season for the Red Deer Rebels in the WHL. He registered 67 points (18 goals, 49 assists) in 64 games and added another 16 points in 12 postseason matches.
