Rangers youngsters take to the international stage

With the KHL concluding last week, we are only waiting for who will win the Championship in the SHL (Sweden) and Liiga (Finland). International hockey is in full swing though, and two prospects, a goalie and a potential future prospect are all playing.

Alexandar Georgiev made his debut for the Russian men’s national team, winning twice against Switzerland while stopping 46 of 49 shots in the contests. He was picked as player of the game in the second game and looks to solidify his spot between the pipes with the Carlson games coming up next week, which is part of the Euro Hockey Tour.

In that Euro Hockey Tour weekend, we may see Tarmo Reunanen and Kaapo Kakko play for Finland. The 21-year-old defenseman has played six games for the national team this season and with guys like Heiskanen and Lindell, still active in the NHL playoffs, there is a chance we’ll see Tarmo in action next week in Brno. Finland has two games scheduled against Sweden this week.

Kaapo Kakko has played in four games this month, with double-headers against Scandinavian foes Norway and Denmark. Despite not registering any points, the 18-year old, who is projected to be picked second overall by the Rangers this summer, looked poised and dominant at times. He has had shifts where he flat-out controlled the play, which is impressive for a player his age. Kakko decided to not participate in the U18 World Juniors this year. Having won gold in the U18 and U20 tournaments in the past 12 months, he decided to focus on playing for the men’s team.
