Brennan Othmann is strongly considered one of the top New York Rangers prospects. The 19 year-old was selected in the first round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft 16th overall. Unfortunately for him and the classes of the 2020 and 2021 Drafts, it was held virtually due to the pandemic and he could not attend.
This summer, the 2022 NHL Draft was held live in Montreal at the Bell Centre and many teams invited their first -round picks from 2021 to attend.
Othmann was a guest for the Rangers and spoke with the media on Day One of the Draft this past Thursday.
“I’m really excited about the summer and about and going to the Rangers [Development] Camp on Monday,” Othmann said. “I want to make the team. I feel like I can but at the same time I’m still honored that they selected and invited me to the Draft.”

This past season for the Flint Firebirds, the versatile forward was an absolute force. In 66 regular games, he posted 50 goals and 97 points per the OHL’s website. He also added 9 goals and 24 points in 19 postseason games.
“The goal is to try and make the team the best that I can,” Othmann stated. “I know they’re a strong team with good young players and good leadership too. If I can make the team it’d be great for me and the organization. We’ll see what happens and I’m excited.
“I had a good season. I played well for myself and [Flint]. If I can come in with that amount of confidence into Rangers camp and make the team it would be something special.”
Rangers President & General Manager Chris Drury was told about Othmann’s goal for the season and was happy to hear it.
“I’m glad that’s what his goal is,” Drury replied. “He obviously had a heck of a year last year and it was good to see him here [at the draft]. A lot of those kids missed out on the experience. I’m looking forward to seeing him in Development Camp next week.
“He’s a big time goal scorer and had a good year putting the puck in the net. He’s got a little bit of an edge to his game too. He’s a feisty kid that’s very competitive and does a lot of things we like all over the ice.”
Othmann was also named to Team Canada’s National Junior camp roster. He will be competing for a spot to play in the 2023 World Junior Championship but his focus is strictly on being ready for Monday’s opening of Development Camp.
“Two things [that improved] were my defense and confidence,” he said. ‘I worked on my defensive game a lot and my skating. I’m hoping to bring that to camp on Monday and into the season.”
Note: The New York Rangers have just released their full camp invite list on Sunday for tomorrow’s Development Camp. The list includes promising prospect Brett Berard, who will be attending along with his brother Brady as a free agent. New York’s 2022 Draft picks are also going to be attending. Others that will to be on hand are Will Cuylle, Matthew Rempe, Ryder Korczak, Bobby Trivigno, Adam Edstrom, Hunter Skinner, Matthew Robertson, Dylan Garand, and more.
