Brennan Othmann takes dirty hit from fellow Rangers prospect, gets payback

New York Rangers fans know all about 2021 first-round pick Brennan Othmann.

After scoring 50 goals in the OHL last season, Othmann is considered one of the organization’s top prospects. He will be competing for a potential spot on the roster at training camp come September.

Another prospect Rangers fans didn’t know too much about was big Czechia winger Jaroslav Chmelar. At 6-4 and 198 lbs, he’s an imposing figure and making a name for himself at the World Junior Championship with big hits.

Early in yesterday’s game between Canada and Czechia, Jaroslav Chmelar hit Brennan Othmann hard from behind just two feet away from the boards.

Othmann was shaken up pretty badly on the play as Chmelar was ejected for the hit.

Czechia scored the first goal of the game, but Othmann helped tie it with a secondary assist on Mason McTavish’s tally. (Note: official scoring has yet to be corrected). The Rangers top prospect also picked up another assist later in the game for Canada to keep them undefeated at the WJC.

Othmann is a gifted offensive player but will not shy away from contact. He will even initiate it when appropriate. In the third period, he exacted a little payback of his own with a big clean check on an unsuspecting opponent.

Will Cuylle, whom the Rangers picked in the second-round of the 2020 draft did not register a point. Goalie prospect Dylan Garand posted his second consecutive win, once again stopping 22 of 23 shots in the 5-1 victory.

Chmelar, a fifth-round pick in 2021, played only 1:34 of the contest.

Brett Berard, who the Blueshirts chose in the fifth-round of the 2020 Draft has yet to register a point in this tournament for Team USA. They also remain undefeated at the WJC after securing a 7-0 win over Austria.
