The New York Rangers have promoted defenseman Zac Jones and forward Tim Gettinger from the taxi squad. The move now gives the Rangers 7 healthy defenseman and 13 healthy forwards.

Greg McKegg is expected to replace Kevin Rooney on the 4th line as he entered COVID-19 protocol today.

A more interesting possibility is Zac Jones making his season debut.

Rangers make roster moves

Jones, 21, was selected by the Blueshirts in the third round (68th overall) during the 2019 NHL Draft. After an excellent college career, he made his Blueshirts debut at the tail end of last season picking up 4 assists in 10 games. This season for the Wolf Pack, he leads all defensemen in scoring with 17 points in 21 games.

At practice today, Jones was the only member of the taxi-squad to skate with the regulars.

The defense against Florida is projected to look as follows:

  • Miller – Trouba
  • Hajek – Fox
  • Nemeth – Lundkvist

While it is possible that Lundkvist is still recovering from a non-COVID illness that has seen him scratched for the team’s last four games, that could open the door for Jones. If so, Nemeth could slide to the right side to accommodate the move.

Rangers on COVID protocol include: Ryan Lindgren, Alexandar Georgiev, Kevin Rooney, and Jarred Tinordi. Full injuries here.
