OFFICIAL: David Quinn scratches Tony DeAngelo for tonight’s Rangers v Islanders rematch

All the signs pointed to this happening yesterday when Tony DeAngelo was regulated to skating with the taxi squad. Well David Quinn has made it official and will scratch him in tonight’s rematch versus the Islanders.

GAMEDAY PREVIEW: NYR VS NYI 1/16/21

Tony DeAngelo scratched tonight

Brendan Smith will be coming into tonight’s lineup as well as Phil Di Giuseppe for injured Kevin Rooney.

The scratching of Tony DeAngelo is sure to be met with a lot of criticism, especially if Jack Johnson struggles as badly as he did in game one of the season.

How we got here

In the Rangers 4-0 loss to the Islanders on Thursday, Tony DeAngelo took an undisciplined unsportsmanlike penalty after he received a holding call. When DeAngelo skated to the box, he mouthed off to the refs and slammed the door shut.

It was probably the most emotion we saw from any Ranger that night in a game where they were manhandled. Not a single response from a blue sweater to any of the heavy contact some players received, including Igor Shesterkin getting run over.

This leads me to my next point, the Rangers took 8 minors in that game. That’s a lot of discipline issues, which DeAngelo was responsible for two. The reality is that he actually played decent defensively, while his partner Jack Johnson looked immobile and slow. The veteran was struggling to complete the simplest of passes. Somehow, DeAngelo is the scratch which leads me to think there’s more going on here then just sending a message to not take penalties.
