Brennan Othmann just completed New York Rangers Prospect Development Camp but won’t be resting for long.

Forever Blueshirts has been told that Othmann will be heading to Edmonton to compete for Team Canada at the recently rescheduled World Junior Championships from August 9th to 20th. The tournament was cancelled back in December.

This past season for the Flint Firebirds, the versatile forward was an absolute force. In 66 regular games, he posted 50 goals and 97 points per the OHL’s website. He also added 9 goals and 24 points in 19 postseason games.

After the tournament, Othmann will be joining the Rangers for training camp in September with one mission on his mind.

“The goal is to try and make the team the best that I can,” Othmann said.. “I know they’re a strong team with good young players and good leadership too. If I can make the team it’d be great for me and the organization. I had a good season. I played well for myself and [Flint]. If I can come in with that amount of confidence into Rangers camp and make the team it would be something special.”

Rangers President & General Manager Chris Drury was told about Othmann’s goal for the season and was happy to hear it.

“I’m glad that’s what his goal is,” Drury replied. “He obviously had a heck of a year last year.”

This past Friday, the New York Rangers announced the signing of their first pick in the 2022 NHL Draft Adam Sykora to a three-year entry-level contract. Per CapFriendly, the AAV is $950,000.

“I came out after [the scrimmage] and they told me ‘you’re going to sign’,” Sykora said. “I was real excited and happy for it. Great day for me.”

Sykora 17, recorded 10 goals and 17 points in 46 games with Nitra. He added two goals in five games for Slovakia at the 2021-22 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

“Adam Sykora’s motor is outstanding,” Director of Scouting John Lilley said. “He doesn’t stop working. He’s highly competitive. I don’t want to take away from his skill set and his ability to skate. But he’s definitely a high character, hard-working player.”

The Rangers don’t really make it a habit of quickly signing draft picks to their ELC but Sykora represents the second fastest in the salary cap era. Alexis Lafreniere holds the top honor beating Sykora by a day.

Here’s a look at some of the fastest ELC signings:

  • Alexis Lafrenière, 6 days (2020, 1st overall)
  • Adam Sýkora, 7 days (2022, 2nd, 63)
  • Lias Andersson, 20 days (2017, 1st rd, 7)
  • Kaapo Kakko, 20 days (2019, 2nd overall)
  • Brennan Othmann, 20 days (2021, 1st rd, 16)
  • Filip Chytil, 21 days (2017, 1st rd, 21)
  • JT Miller, 34 days (2011, 1st rd, 15)

This list was compiled by Steven Voogel.

In another interesting bit of news, the signing of Sykora may have had another motive for the Rangers. By getting him under contract, they now have some control next season as to where he plays. Right now, Nitra has the final word as Sykora and his agent try to work out his options.
