Rangers Roundup: Lundqvist, Lemieux, and Lafreniere

It’s been a busy day today in the NHL. Here’s some stories you may have missed plus the latest news and rumors over at The Daily Goal Horn. Let’s quickly recap it all for you and give you some Rangers news.

Rangers news on Henrik Lundqvist

As we wait on where the situation with Henrik Lundqvist and the Rangers will go, speculation is continuing to run rampant. Today I spoke with reporter, Johan Rylander in Sweden and the media manager for the Frolunda Indians.

Rumors still swirl around Lundqvist and his old Swedish club team Frolunda. The thought is that the team is holding closed door sessions to hide the fact Lundqvist is using the training facility. I was told by Frolunda that the reason for the closed door sessions was to follow the earlier coronavirus guidelines and that Lundqvist isn’t part of the team.

It sounds like Brendan Lemieux is expecting to stay in NY next season

Rangers RFA, Brendan Lemieux was on Tony DeAnelo’s podcast released today. The gritty forward said he was coming back to NY and will begin training.

While there was no direct questions about his contract status Lemieux said the following:

“I love Rangers fans…playing for the Blueshirts, I love the blue seats and the blue collar fans which is obvious with the way I play,” he said emphatically. “I love playing at Madison Square Garden,” he continued. “There’s no better city to live in and there’s no better place in the world.”

Let’s see where this goes soon.

Alexis Lafreniere is a “special player”

Prospect connaisseur, Pierre McGuire has some glowing things to say about consensus #1 pick, Alexis Lafreniere. “He’s a special player and I’ve been watching him for a long time,” he said.

Pierre then told the WFAN radio hosts that he texted New York Rangers coach, David Quinn. “I said you just became a better coach. And David’s a heck of a coach. This player is spectacular,” he recounted.

Of course, Pierre’s comments brought a little consternation among the Rangers fanbase. Unsolicited he said, “Is he a Connor McDavid? No. A Nathan MacKinnon? No. He’s not the kind of player who can take over games as a winger. But he’s a spectacular player and is going to be a huge part of the Rangers moving forward.”
